Alabama Earns First NCAA Tournament Berth Since 2012

It’s official. The Alabama men’s basketball team is back in the NCAA Tournament.

Alabama was given a 9 seed and is matched up with the 8-seeded Virginia Tech Hokies. The two teams will meet on Thursday at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh. The winner of the game will likely play against Villanova, the tournament’s second overall 1 seed.

The Crimson Tide heard their name called pretty quickly on Selection Sunday. With the new format, teams were first stated in alphabetical order and Alabama was the first at-large bid to be announced by the TBS crew.

It is the first time since 2012 that the Crimson Tide will be in the big dance and just the second time in the last 12 seasons. It will be the first time Alabama will play in the NCAA Tournament under head coach Avery Johnson.

In the Tide’s last March Madness appearance, they lost in the opening round as a 9 seed to Creighton. That team included current NBA player JaMychal Green and other former Alabama stars Trevor Releford, Levi Randolph and Andrew Steele.

Avery Johnson’s team currently sits at 19-15 on the season after making it to the SEC Tournament semifinals. The Crimson Tide won seven quadrant 1 games, which is tied for the seventh most in the country.

Alabama is one of eight SEC teams in this year’s tournament field. It was the lowest-seeded team from the conference. The regular season champion Auburn Tigers earned a 4 seed while Kentucky, the conference tournament champions, also earned a 4 seed.

Virginia earned the number one overall seed in the tournament after winning both the ACC regular season championship and ACC Tournament. Villanova, Kansas and Xavier fill out the remaining top seeds.

The NCAA Tournament starts on Tuesday with the First Four play-in games in Dayton. The action starts at 5:40 p.m. CT and will be on TruTV. You can print off a full bracket from here.
