Rapid Recap: Alabama 86, Lipscomb 64

TUSCALOOSA – Alabama opened its home campaign with an 86-64 win over Lipscomb on Tuesday night. The Crimson Tide used a complete team effort as nine players got on the score sheet for the home team.

“We think that if we can have great balance,” head coach Avery Johnson said after the game. “We’re going to be a lot harder to scout because you’re not going to try to shut down one guy to limit our success.”

Collin Sexton scored 9 points in the first half and finish with a team-high 22 points. In his first collegiate basketball game, Sexton shot 70 percent from the field and knocked down three 3-pointers. He added five assists, two steals and a rebound in 27 minutes. Alabama outscored its opponents by 21 with Sexton in the game.

John Petty led three other Crimson Tide players in double figures. Petty finished with 14 points while Dazon Ingram added 13 of his own. Ingram also added seven rebounds and five assists. Donta Hall scored 10 points to go with his five rebounds and three assists.

As a team, Alabama shot 59.6 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Tide used another strong second half, in which they outscored Lipscomb by 13, to put the game away.

The visitors never led in the second half but they cut the Tide’s lead to 43-42 with 16:09 to go in the game. After an Avery Johnson timeout, Alabama outscored the Bison 43-22 down the stretch.

The biggest struggle of the night was a familiar one for the home crowd. Alabama was just 12 of 32 from the free throw line. At just 37.5 percent, it was the Crimson Tide’s worst free throw performance since last year’s 67-58 regular season loss to Kentucky.

Alabama will look to stay undefeated when it hosts Alabama A&M on Friday night. The game is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. CT and can be seen on SECNetwork+.
