Collin Sexton Not Eligible For Exhibition

With less than an hour before the tipoff of Alabama’s exhibition game against UAH, the University of Alabama released a statement saying that Collin Sexton is not yet eligible to play this season.

“The NCAA informed us late this afternoon that Colin Sexton has not had his eligibility reinstated by the NCAA. We don’t have any further information at this time, but we will continue to cooperate with the NCAA and work toward a resolution that results in Colin’s timely reinstatement. While we are disappointed, the right decision was to err on the side of caution for tonight’s exhibition game.” – Alabama AD Greg Byrne

Avery Johnson was available after Monday night’s exhibition game against UAH. The Tide’s head coach continued to emphasize the same statement that Greg Byrne made on Sexton’s eligibility.

“We’ve been proactive through this whole process,” Johnson said. “We’re a little disappointed obviously… But the right decision was the err on the side of caution.”

Johnson continued to get questions but had little information to give. The head coach said there was no current investigation and that he hopes for a quick resolution.

“He’s handled this whole process in a first-class manner,” Johnson said of Sexton. “You’re talking about a kid who has straight A’s. He gets upset when he gets below a 90 on a test… Obviously he was a bit disappointed but he said ‘okay coach, I’ll go back to my dorm and get some clothes and I’ll get on the bench and cheer on the guys.’ That’s what type of kid he is.”

The 5-star freshman was (and still is) a large part of the hype for the Crimson Tide’s season. ESPN recently ranked Sexton as the nation’s 14th best player.

While this does not give much on Sexton’s future for the 2017-18 season, it certainly is not something Alabama fans wanted to see this close to the start of the year.
