TUSCALOOSA, Ala.– After bringing in a top-five recruiting class for this season and anticipating a marquee postseason campaign, Alabama men’s basketball head coach Avery Johnson landed another top recruit for 2018 as the Tide got a commitment from four-star Jared Butler.

Butler, a native of Reserve, La., is a product of Riverside Academy.

Listed at 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds, the four-star point guard had offers from Baylor, Virginia, Texas, Wichita State, Creighton, Houston and Massachusetts, but he chose Alabama.

Antoine Pettway, who played for the Crimson Tide and is an assistant coach, got Butler to commit on Monday and was very pleased on social media after the endeavor. Seeing how the state of Louisiana is such a hotbed for elite talent, one can expect for Butler to possess the abilities of attacking the basket, having a strong mid-range game and being a stout defender.

Butler is one of six top targets on Alabama’s board for the 2018 signing class – joining shooting guards Will Richardson (four-star) and Diante Wood (three-star), small forwards Khavon Moore (four-star) and Robert Woodard (four-star) and three-star center Javian Fleming.

While the Tide awaits its tip-off on Oct. 24 in Coleman Coliseum, Johnson and company will continue on the recruiting trail in aiming to land top guys. Now in his third season, the former NBA champion and Coach of the Year looks to take Alabama deep in the NCAA Tournament.
